When inhabitants have more possibilities to change its configuration, in order to make it match directly to their needs and histories, the building showsthe traces of the construction of memory.Through the observation of self-help housing in peripheral neighbourhoods in Lima – wheredesigner, builder and inhabitant are all one person – we see that function acts upon structure, and shows history through it. Built space describes the inhabitant’s life. Changes in thehouse and its aspect are the skin of the family’s history.The memory in self-built city is born of the sum of changes in individual structures: a symbolism that emerges out of the everydayness. Identity in such places shows itself with intensity,and collective sense and place attachment are built through an endless process of denken,bauen and wohnen. La memoria de un lugar se refiere a momentos atípicos en la historia tanto como a eventosregulares que impactan en la memoria colectiva; lo cotidiano deja huella en los lugares. Lacasa es el ámbito de esta memoria cotidiana. Cuando los habitantes tienen mayores posibilidades de alterarla, de modo que responda directamente a sus necesidades e historias,el edificio muestra señales de la construcción de la memoria.Al observar la vivienda autoconstruida en la periferia de Lima, donde diseñador, constructory habitante son una misma persona – vemos que la función actúa directamente sobre laforma y muestra la historia a través de esta. El espacio construido describe las vidas de sushabitantes. Los cambios en la vivienda y su aspecto son la piel de la historia de la familia.La memoria en la ciudad autoconstruida surge de la suma de cambios en estructuras individuales: un simbolismo que emerge de la cotidianidad, en lugar de lo extraordinario.La identidad en estos entornos se muestra con intensidad, y se construye un sentido decolectividad y apego al lugar a través del proceso constante de pensar, construir y habitar.
