In order to achieve the objectives of regional integration, it is necessary to analyse UNASUR experiences and difficulties regarding democracy and human rights; both are the criteria to assess the international conduct of states in the Americas.En el presente trabajo se plantea los retos de la integración subregional por parte de algunos Estados de América del Sur, teniendo en cuenta dos fenómenos: los antecedentes dictatoriales en la región son provocados generalmente por golpes de estado militares, sean de sectores conservadores o progresistas y la concentración del poder en el ejecutivo con efectos en el equilibrio de los poderes.
