For this reason it is not possible to talk about a national identity in the European sense.El artículo discute si los peruanos han logrado forjar una identidad nacional semejante a los de los distintos pueblos europeos. El autor sostiene que sí existe identidad nacional peruana, la misma que se manifiesta de múltiples y diferentes maneras. Sin embargo, sostiene también que el rasgo distintivo de esta identidad es un mestizaje aún problemático de la cultura andina y la cultura prehispánica.
