Risk perception and the adoption of animal by-products in poultry feed among small-scale poultry farmers

use of animal by-products in poultry feed is an alternative for improving the sustainability of production systems, as it allows waste to be valorized and resources to be optimized. The objective of the study was to analyze the level of knowledge, risk perception, and factors associated with the use of by-products among small poultry producers in Tacna (Peru). A descriptive-exploratory study was conducted in which a survey was administered to 20 producers selected by convenience sampling. Variables related to knowledge, adoption, technical training, and risk perception were evaluated. In addition, a risk perception index was constructed and a binary logistic regression model was estimated to explore the factors associated with adoption. The level of knowledge about the use of by-products was partial and the observed adoption was low. Perception of health risk was identified as the main concern. Contingency analysis showed that producers who use by-products have low levels of risk perception, while among those with moderate or high perceptions, no cases of adoption were recorded. The logistic model had moderate explanatory power (Nagelkerke's R² = 0.551), although none of the individual variables reached statistical significance (p > 0.05). Risk perception emerges as a significant barrier to the adoption of by-products in poultry feed, while technical training and clear health guidelines could facilitate their incorporation into small-scale production systems.
