Descripción
Sumario:Objective: To determine the effectiveness of various antimicrobial agents in disinfection of gutta-percha, was the aim of the study. Methodology: 40 cones were cultivated in Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) culture medium at 37 ° C for 24 hours to see if there was bacterial growth. These same cones were divided into five groups to be introduced in the antimicrobial solutions: 2% chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide 3% sodium hypochlorite 2.5% ethyl alcohol 70% and 10% povidone iodine for a time immersion of 10 minutes, then were removed and cultured individually in BHI. Results: 2% chlorhexidine, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and 3% hydrogen peroxide showed antimicrobial effectiveness in all gutta-percha cones; 10% povidone iodine was effective only for half the cases. Ethyl alcohol 70% was not effective in disinfecting gutta-percha. Conclusions: The results of this study show that 2% chlorhexidine, 2,5% sodium hypochlorite and 3% hydrogen peroxide are equally effective for disinfection of gutta-percha.
