La familia presenta sólo un género y una especie, Ocythoe tuberculata Rafinesque, 1814. Esta especie es epipelágica y posiblemente cosmopolita en aguas oceánicas cálidas (subtropicales) de los Océanos Atlántico, Pacífico e índico y del Mar Mediterráneo.
