Political violence, present during the last twenty years in our country, has had high social, economical, moral and health costs. Today's impact is evidenced not only by the generation that lived the armed conflict, but also by the following generations. Feelings of distrust, fear and hopelessness are interlaced with the projects of development and generation of social capital in rural populations, decreasing their well-being and productivity. The international and national decision taken by the World Health Organization and the Peruvian Ministry of Health on the importance and intervention on mental health has generated actions addressed to enabling health workers of affected regions, as well as offering care and follow-up to people affected by the armed conflict. Results of our experience as the Peruvian Ministry of Health's National Institute of Mental Health itinerant technical team on three Peruvian departments and our ongoing intervention are described in this article.Las actuales políticas de salud, con un rostro más participativo, inclusivo y equitativo, han logrado establecer a la salud mental como una de las prioridades sanitarias a nivel nacional. La violencia política, presente durante veinte años en nuestro país, ha tenido un alto costo social, económico, moral y de salud; su impacto se evidencia hoy, no solo en la generación que afrontó el conflicto armado, sino también en las generaciones siguientes. Sentimientos de desconfianza, temor y desesperanza se imbrican con los proyectos de desarrollo y generación de capital social en las poblaciones rurales, mermando su bienestar y productividad. La determinación en las decisiones tomadas a nivel global, por la Organización Mundial de la Salud, y nacional, por el Ministerio de Salud, sobre la importancia y trabajo en el tema de salud mental, han generado acciones dirigidas a brindar capacitación al personal de salud de las localidades afectadas, como también atención y seguimiento a las personas afectadas por el conflicto armado.
