The objective of the study was to observe the detection capacity of NDM carbapenemases in Klebsiella pneumoniae using the modified carbapenem inactivation method (mCIM). A cross-sectional study was carried out using clinical isolates from a level IV hospital in Lima (Perú) in the months of March to May 2018. It was worked with 40 clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae resistant to carbapenems, positive for the NDM gene and 15 clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae sensitive to carbapenems, negative for the NDM gene. The identification of the gene was carried out by conventional PCR. The mCIM in Klebsiella pneumoniae type NDM demonstrated a sensitivity and specificity of 100% and kappa of 1, compared to the PCR. The implementation of the mCIM for the detection of NDM-type carbapenemases in Klebsiella pneumoniae is recommended in laboratories as a fast, easy, low-cost, and timely method for controlling the hospital spread of this type of bacteria.
