After intravenous administration of hydrocortisone , the amount of urinary steroids appearing in the urine within 24 hours , is equal to the high altitude native and native sea level. This result is interpreted to mean that the catabolism of hydrocortisone is also similar , and that the same urinary excretion at baseline reflects equal hydrocortisone production by the adrenal cortex . By inhibiting the endogenous corticotrophin, by dexamethasone , urinary excretion of steroids in equal magnitude decreases in the two groups studied . This result is interpreted in the sense that equality in the production of hydrocortisone is intrinsically dependent on the adrenal cortex.No hemos encontrado diferencias entre nativos de las grandes alturas y nativos del nivel del mar en la excreción urinaria de 17-cetoesteroides y de 17,21-dihidroxi-20-cetoesteroides, en condiciones basales. Después de la administración endovenoso de hidrocortisona, la cantidad de esteroides urinarios que aparecen en orina durante las siguientes 24 horas, es igual en nativos de las grandes alturas y en nativos del nivel del mar. Este resultado se interpreta en el sentido de que el catabolismo de la hidrocortisona es también similar y de que la igual excreción urinaria en condiciones basales refleja una igual producción de hidrocortisona por la corteza suprarrenal. Al inhibir la corticotrofina endógena, por medio de la dexametasona, la excrecin urinaria de esteroides decrece en igual magnitud en los dos grupos estudiados.
