The consumption of beverages and foods with high acid content corresponds to the main extrinsic factor of dental erosion, while the endogenous acids that project into the mouth through the esophagus during vomiting or regurgitation are part of the intrinsic factors that contribute to this injury. The prevention and treatment of eroded teeth are real challenges in dental practice. Therefore, this article aims to collect information available in the current literature on the etiology, clinical characteristics and treatment of erosive dental wear, to provide a practical guide for dental surgeons and students.La erosión dental se define como la pérdida progresiva de la estructura dental asociada a ácidos de origen no bacteriano y con efectos irreversibles. El consumo de bebidas y alimentos con alto contenido ácido corresponde al principal factor contribuyente extrínseco para la erosión dental, mientras que los ácidos endógenos que se proyectan, a través del esófago, en la boca, durante el vómito o regurgitación, forman parte de los factores intrínsecos que contribuyen con esta lesión. La prevención y tratamiento de dientes erosionados constituyen verdaderos desafíos en la práctica odontológica.
