The objective of this article is to address Plato’s thinking on love, primarily in the texts of the Banquet and the Phaedrus. In the critical interpretation we have developed, we have sought to systematize Plato’s most important ideas on love, which has allowed us to compare sensitive and passionate love with rational and reflective love, oriented toward the virtue of the soul. This comparison and study are particularly significant in our postmodern times, where there is often a lack of clarity between sensitive love and perfect love, a situation that can lead to crisis and existential anguish. Finally, in our essay, we have included a critical analysis in which we consider the various contemporary perspectives on love and how they confront each other to reach a synthesis that enables us, in practical terms, to define what love is. The present essay expands upon a larger research project carried out for my master’s thesis in the History of Philosophy (Espíritu, 2023).
