During the design process, a pre-design stage and a final design stage are carried out in which it is possible to quantify the results of the energy balance. The objective of the research proposes a method to determine the orientation of a building in tropical climates in order to achieve buildings with energy standards close to zero, with greater energy efficiency. The methodology used is inductive, based on the designer's experience, analyzes questions and induces solutions. It uses the "orthogonal projection of the apparent path of the sun" and the ambient temperature conditions. The result obtained from the investigation offers an application procedure, practical and easy to execute, to be used in the first stage of design, which allows to determine a priori the adequate orientation of the walls and windows of a building to achieve the maximum efficiency of the balance energy for a given climate. The procedure is validated through an energy balance calculation for a prototype in the Peruvian territory.En el proceso de diseño de una edificación, la orientación es uno de los criterios utilizados en el planteamiento, la cual depende de varios factores, entre ellos la radiación solar por asoleamiento y el Clima. Durante el proceso de diseño se realiza una etapa de prediseño y una etapa de diseño definitivo en la cual es posible cuantificar los resultados del balance de energía. El objetivo de la investigación plantea un método para determinar la orientación de una edificación en climas tropicales con la finalidad de lograr edificaciones con estándares de energía cerca a cero, con mayor eficiencia energética. La metodología utilizada es inductiva, basada en la experiencia del diseñador, analiza interrogantes e induce soluciones. Utiliza la “proyección ortogonal del recorrido aparente del sol” y las condiciones de temperatura ambiental. El resultado obtenido de la investigación ofrece un procedimiento aplicativo, práctico y fácil de ejecutar, para emplearlo en la primera etapa de diseño, lo cual permite determinar a priori la adecuada orientación de las paredes y ventanas de una edificación para lograr la máxima eficiencia del balance energético en un determinado clima.
