Student’s dress and academic identity in Spain

The importance that the Spanish university students gave to publicly show their student identity through their clothing is studied. We take care of the clothing used to attend classes and the most significant extracurricular activity: the carnival troupes made up of scholars and initially known Estudiantinas. The analysis identifies the types and evolution of the garments used in both aspects of their activity and reveals the historical period in which a specific uniform was no longer required to attend classes causing a loss of group image that contrasts with the showed by their Estudiantinas and Tunas, in which since the end of the 19th century they show their academic identity through their costume and/or elements added to it.
