In this context, the present study examines the role of green areas in higher education institutions, using the “Edison Riera” campus of the Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo (UNACH), located in Riobamba, Ecuador, as a case study. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative and qualitative techniques, integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools and perception surveys conducted with students, faculty, and administrative staff. The study involved classifying open spaces, identifying surface areas, evaluating their conservation status, and analyzing how these areas are perceived and used. The results revealed that the campus hosts 6,836 plant specimens, 72.24% of which are trees. Of these, 43.56% are in good condition. Survey participants indicated that these areas are essential to academic development, with stress reduction identified as the main benefit. This article emphasizes the relevance of green areas in university environments not only for their ecological value but also for their direct impact on academic performance and wellbeing. Furthermore, it provides key data to support the sustainable planning and management of campus green infrastructure. El 13 de abril de 2011, la ciudad de San Pedro de Riobamba fue declarada Ciudad Politécnica, Universitaria y Tecnológica del Ecuador por la Asamblea Nacional, reconociendo el aporte de sus universidades al desarrollo regional. Esta designación ha impactado notablemente en el crecimiento urbano, social y ambiental del territorio. En este contexto, el presente estudio analiza el rol de las áreas verdes en los centros de educación superior, tomando como caso el campus "Edison Riera" de la Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo - UNACH, ubicado en Riobamba Ecuador. Para su estudio se ha utilizado una metodología mixta que combina técnicas cuantitativas y cualitativas, integrado a herramientas SIG y encuestas de percepción aplicadas a estudiantes, docentes y personal administrativo. Se realizó la clasificación de los espacios abiertos, se identificó la superficie, el estado de conservación y la percepción de uso de los mismos. Los resultados de la información revelaron que el campus alberga 6,836 especies vegetales, de las cuales el 72.24 % corresponden a árboles. El 43.56 % se encuentra en buen estado. La percepción de los usuarios identifica que su presencia es crucial para el desarrollo académico identificando como principal beneficio la reducción del estrés. Este artículo resalta la importancia de las áreas verdes en entornos universitarios, no solo por sus aportes ecológicos, sino por su impacto directo en el bienestar y rendimiento académico.
