The present article reports on the ombudsman's objectives, its differential characteristics, its functions, its typology, its qualities, its advantages and limitations and clarifies some aspects related to the history of this professional character.Aunque recibe diferentes nombres, poco se sabe de su actividad. Al defensor de la audiencia le corresponde recibir e investigar las quejas de los consumidores sobre la imparcialidad y el buen gusto en la cobertura de las informaciones. Éste es el sentido modemo de la figura que data de 1967 cuando por vez primera se introdujo en un diario estadounidense. El presente artículo da cuenta de los objectivos del defensor, sus características diferenciales, sus funciones, su tipología, sus cualidades, sus ventajas y limitaciones y aclara asimismo algunos aspectos relativos a la historia de esta figura profesional.Universidad de Piura.
