The objective of the present study is to describe the content and structure of the traditional abstract, as well as the textual and discursive elements of it. The study is basic, non-experimental descriptive design. Documentary analysis was used as a technique, which focused on the structural units of the abstracts according to their rhetorical organization. The sample is made up of 252 abstracts of Master thesis in Education from 11 Peruvian universities, digitized in the National Registry of Research Works (RENATI). The study is based on the proposal of analysis of the traditional abstracts made by Piqué-Nogueras and Camaño-Puig from the Weissberg & Buker; and Hyland models. Among the most significant results, there is a high variability in the structure and content of the abstracts analyzed. Based on these results, it is recommended that universities unify their editorial criteria in these sections.El resumen es una sección de la tesis en la que se sintetiza, de manera estructurada, el proceso investigativo seguido. Su inclusión ayuda al lector a conocer brevemente el contenido del estudio, a motivar su lectura y a la divulgación de sus aportes. El objetivo del presente estudio es describir el contenido y estructura del resumen tradicional, así como los elementos textuales y discursivos del mismo. El estudio es de tipo básico, de diseño descriptivo no experimental. Se recurrió como técnica el análisis documental, el cual se centró en las unidades estructurales de los resúmenes según su organización retórica. La muestra está conformada por 252 resúmenes de tesis de maestría en Educación de 11 universidades peruanas, digitalizadas en el Registro Nacional de Trabajos de Investigación (RENATI). El estudio toma como base la propuesta de análisis de los resúmenes tradicionales hecho por Piqué-Nogueras y Camaño-Puig a partir de los modelos de Weissberg & Buker; y de Hyland. Entre los resultados más significativos destacan la existencia de una alta variabilidad en cuanto a la estructura y contenido de los resúmenes analizados.
