Crossover design was used with a significance level of 0.05 (p <0.05) and found no statistically significant difference regarding sex between the following components: interpersonal component, stress management and general mood. There are differences regarding the type of school in total emotional quotient, intrapersonal component, adaptability, stress management, the subcomponents of self-knowledge, assertiveness, self-concept, self-realization, social responsibility, problem solving, reality testing, flexibility, stress management, impulse control and optimism.La investigación buscó establecer diferencias en la inteligencia emocional de estudiantes del primer ciclo de una universidad privada. La muestra estuvo constituida por 1.940 sujetos de ambos sexos, entre 16 y 25 años, a quienes se aplicó el Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory. Se utilizó el diseño transversal con un nivel de significancia de 0.05 (p<0.05), encontrando que hay diferencias estadísticamente significativas respecto del sexo entre los componentes interpersonales, manejo de estrés y estado de ánimo general.
