In the first case, modernization leads us to the study of the rigid social structures that contextualize -based on criteria of inequality- the processes of urbanization and suburbanization of the city. In the second case, citizenship leads us to the subjective experience of men and women who, in their struggle for equality, seek to transcend the borders of differences marked by the social structure.La historia que sigue es una aproximación a la experiencia de apropiación de la modernidad por parte de los distintos grupos sociales de la ciudad de México entre los años de 1870 y 1930. Esta experiencia es posible de ser analizada a partir de dos variables: la modernización de la ciudad y el desarrollo de la ciudadanía. En el primer caso, la modernización nos conduce al estudio de las rígidas estructuras sociales que contextúan -a partir de criterios de desigualdad- los procesos de urbanización y suburbanización de la ciudad.
