Descripción
Sumario:This article follows the Peruvian documentation on hysteria from the end of the 19th century. This account includes literary works, theses and medical journals. Although hysteria was the most frequent diagnosis when patients were admitted to the Lima Asylum, the publications of the time did not pay special attention to it. Moreover, its scholars reproduced what was prescribed by French medicine. It was understood as a neurological disease, of elusive origin, and with diverse manifestations. Regarding the treatments applied, these ranged from sedatives and purges to electrotherapy and, incidentally, hypnosis.
