Descripción
Sumario:The following research explores the relationship between social media network dependency, and student’s academic performance in a sample of freshmen from an Arequipean private university. Using the Social Network Addiction Questionnaire, three types of criteria were evaluated: Lack of Personal Control; Social Network’s Obsession; and Excessive Use of social networks. The final mean of the 2016-2 semester was used as a relevant factor to determine the academic performance. Once all the important sociodemographic variables were controlled, regression models showed that the effect is not statistically significant for men, whilst for women the Obsession is significantly related in a negative way with the academic performance, meanwhile the criteria Excessive use of social networks is significantly related in a positive way. The value of this research lies in the possibility of improving teaching techniques, and virtual learning, taking into consideration the positive connection between the excessive use of social networks and student’s academic performance. Finally, we consider important to study the heterogeneous nature of social media network dependency.
