An approach to the world of fun, of the entertainment spread by this elite suggests some analytical clues for understanding this experience of modernity.En el presente trabajo mostraré cómo las transformaciones impulsadas por el Estado y una élite local en la Lima de fines de siglo se inscriben en un ideal de modernidad. Este ideal, común en las élites latinoamericanas y al amparo de las ideas positivistas, no sólo se asoció con un progreso material sino que también fue acompañado de la necesidad de crear una cultura nacional moderna, para lo cual se fomentaron los valores, costumbres y usos acordes al estilo de vida europeo. ¿Cuáles fueron los medios con los que se trató de ir imponiendo este nuevo estilo de vida?
