| Sumario: | The following article presents the common characteristics of the problem of school violence as it occurs in Spain, as well as globally. The author proposes to rename the phenomenon by using the Spanish neologism disconvivencialidad (a term that implies a direct opposition to pacific co-existence.) Among some other reasons, the term clarifies the long-term consequences that an inappropriate school environment has over democracy. A survey was conducted among students and schoolteachers, in order to obtain a better understanding of the characteristics of the problem—focusing on its consequences. The survey asked teachers and students for what they thought the consequences of certain negative school behaviors were. The article discusses the results, and proposes interventions for building a healthy school environment. |
