In 1941, Puquio had 7,000 inhabitants, in 1961 there were 10,000 and in 1977 the population had increased to 16,000 inhabitants. The most important open in the region adjacent to the Puquio region is the Sillanayok: the Pedrorko plays the most important role in the Water Festival.Puquio, capital de la provincia de Lucanas, está ubicado al suroeste del departamento de Ayacucho, aproximadamente a 180 km. de Huamanga, capital del departamento, y 480 Kms. al sureste de Lima. Puquio está a una altura de 3,200 m.s.n.m. y se extiende desde la parte central d la ladera hasta la cima de una colina rodeada por diversos campos de cultivo. En 1941, Puquio contaba con 7,000 habitantes, en 1961 eran 10,000 y en 1977 la población había aumentado a 16,000 pobladores.
