These concerns moved the setting of his texts from the coastal mountains, specifically to the ports of Supe and Chimbote, where through the anchovy fishermen, recent migrants from the Andean peoples, he could follow the confrontation of a traditional culture faced with the capitalism and proletarianization.En José María Arguedas resulta imposible distinguir entre el autor de ficciones y el científico social, entre el novelista y el antropólogo, porque empleó tanto la imaginación como el análisis para un mismo propósito: comprender desde su cultura y su mentalidad a los hombres andinos, dar testimonio de una civilización que no obstante haber persistido desde los lejanos tiempos de la conquista, estaba amenazada por la emergencia avasallante y niveladora del capitalismo.
