The terms "methods", "distraction", "child", “child behavior”, “dental anxiety” and “pediatric dentistry” were used for search. The selection criteria included articles published from January 2017 and December 202 in Spanish and English languages. Observational studies and randomized clinical trials which reported distraction techniques in pediatric dentistry in managing children aged between 5 and 10 years were included. Results: The 3D audiovisual glasses, music, aromatherapy, and playful distraction were most used distractors in children from ages 5 to 10 years. These methods diminished children’s anxiety and fear; and they also improved or maintained a positive children’s behavior during dental treatments. Conclusion: Active distraction techniques such as 3D glasses (games or cartoons) and music therapy (happy or relaxing sounds) as well as passive distraction techniques such as aromatherapy, playful distraction and hypnosis are distractors methods for managing children from ages 5 to 10 years undergo dental treatment. Both passive and active techniques are equally efficient in terms of distraction and can reduce stress, fear, pain and anxiety in children.

Materiales y Métodos: La estrategia de búsqueda de literatura se realizó en las bases de datos electrónicas de Scielo, Pubmed, Scopus y LILACS. Se utilizaron los descriptores "métodos", "distracción", "niño", "comportamiento infantil", "ansiedad dental" y "odontología pediátrica". Los criterios de selección incluyeron artículos publicados entre enero de 2017 y diciembre de 2021 en los idiomas español e inglés. Se incluyeron estudios observacionales y ensayos clínicos aleatorizados que reportaron técnicas de distracción utilizadas en odontopediatría para el manejo de niños entre 5 y 10 años. Resultados: Los distractores más usados en niños de 5 a 10 años fueron los lentes audiovisuales 3D, la música, la aromaterapia y la distracción lúdica. Estos métodos ayudaron a controlar la ansiedad y el miedo; y a mejorar o mantener una conducta positiva en los niños durante la atención odontológica. Conclusión: Las técnicas de distracción activa como los lentes 3D (juegos o dibujos animados) y la musicoterapia (sonidos alegres o relajantes), y las técnicas de distracción pasiva como la aromaterapia, la distracción lúdica y la hipnosis son métodos distractores utilizados para el manejo de conducta de niños de 5 a 10 años durante el tratamiento odontológico.
