Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study publication showed negative effects of a particular HT in older women. This paper reviews HT impact, evaluating benefits against risks and trying to establish when clinical therapy is justified in climacteric women.La menopausia es la manifestación clínica del cese de la función ovárica, que conlleva la presentación de síntomas que deterioran la calidad de vida y aumenta el riesgo de sufrir enfermedades crónicas, afectando la salud de la mujer en el último tercio de su vida. La indicación de la terapia de reemplazo hormonal (TH) dio la impresión de ser la solución para contrarrestar los efectos del climaterio femenino y mantener a la mujer ‘joven por siempre’. La publicación del estudio Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) mostró efectos negativos de una TH particular en mujeres mayores.
