Debido a la presencia de la placenta y el feto, el cuadro clínico y de laboratorio tienen características propias que la diferencian de la malaria del adulto; se producen alteraciones en el organismo de la mujer y en la placenta, afectando en mayor o menor grado al feto, el mismo que queda expuesto a la transmisión vertical. El tratamiento es algo diferente y el pronóstico también.
