This review presents the steps VEMM guided by PAHO and the experience reported by the Ministry of Health with the system of maternal death VE operated in Peru since 1999 and its use for decision-making is reviewed .La vigilancia epidemiológica de la mortalidad materna (VEMM) es el componente del sistema de información de salud que facilita la identificación, notificación, determinación y cuantificación de las causas de muerte materna y la probabilidad de su prevención en áreas geográficas y períodos determinados, con el objeto de contribuir al desarrollo de medidas para su reducción.
