La infección está localizada en algunos focos endémicos de la selva peruana. Su letalidad es alta y puede llegar a un 50%. No existe terapia antiviral alguna y solo es efectiva la prevención a través de la vacunación. Cuando las gestantes se infectan por el virus de la fiebre amarilla, pueden presentar diversas complicaciones, tanto fetales como maternas, llegando incluso a la muerte del feto y de la madre.
