RESULTS: a frequency of 0.7% in the study period, was found half the patients (52.4%) were nulliparous, 13.5% reported having presented hyperemesis in previous pregnancies, pregnancy was not desired at 19 %, it required to be readmitted 12.7%. In 59.5% he corresponded to mild hyperemesis gravidarum and 40.5% for hyperemesis gravidarum with metabolic disorders. In treating the most widely used drug metoclopramide was 84, 1% of cases. The most common complication was dehydration (40.5%), three cases of Wernicke encephalopathy was found, no recorded cases of kidney failure or maternal death. 92.1% showed improvement of symptoms in less than five days, and 91.3% was discharged before the week of hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS: a frequency of 0.7% of hyperemesis gravidarum is determined. The management allowed for a speedy recovery and shorter hospital stay without the development of hospital complications and maternal death.OBJETIVO: Determinar la frecuencia, diagnóstico y manejo de la hiperemesis gravídica. DlSEÑO: Estudio retrospectivo observacional del tipo descriptivo. LUGAR: Departamento de Ginecología y Obstetricia del Hospital Cayetano Heredia, entre enero de 1994 y diciembre de 1997. SUJETOS: Ciento veintiseis pacientes. RESULTADOS: Se encontró una frecuencia de 0,7% en el período de estudio, la mitad de las pacientes (52,4%) fue nulípara, 13,5% refirió haber presentado hiperemesis en gestaciones anteriores, la gestación no fue deseada en 19%, requirió ser reingresada 12,7%. En 59,5% correspondió a hiperemesis gravídica leve y 40,5% a hiperemesis gravídica con trastornos metabólicos. En el tratamiento el fármaco más usado fue la metoclopramida en 84, 1 % de los casos. La complicación más frecuente fue la deshidratación (40,5%), se encontró tres casos de encefalopatía de Wernicke, no registrándose casos de insuficiencia renal ni muerte materna. El 92,1 % presentó mejoría de los síntomas en menos de cinco días, y 91,3% se fue de alta antes de la semana de hospitalización. CONCLUSIONES: Se determinó una frecuencia de 0,7% de hiperemesis gravídica.
