Meanwhile, in developing countries, one in 50 women die due to pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, compared to one in 2,700 in developed countries. Latin America has taken with the world's nations committed to Health for All by the year 20008 and the reduction of maternal and infant mortality. But our region see that this goal is still distant and maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, useful indicators of the health status of a country, improve very slowly.Las condiciones sociodemográficas y económicas de América Latina están caracterizadas por recursos escasos y facilidades sanitarias poco satisfactorias. En circunstancias óptimas, 990 de cada 1000 embarazos que llegan al séptimo mes de gestación concluyen con un recién nacido y una madre sanos. Mientras tanto, en países en vías de desarrollo, una de cada 50 mujeres muere como consecuencia del embarazo, parto y puerperio, a comparación de una de cada 2700 en países desarrollados. América Latina ha asumido con las Naciones del Mundo el compromiso de Salud para Todos en el año 20008 y la reducción de la mortalidad materna e infantil.
