Un instrumento psicométrico elaborado para medir cinco etapas de razonamiento moral fue administrado a hombres y mujeres en cinco niveles educativos. Los sujetos de mayor edad obtuvieron resultados más altos en las etapas más avanzadas; los sujetos más jóvenes en las etapas más bajas. Las mujeres estuvieron por encima de los hombres en la etapa cuatro (respeto por ley); los hombres estuvieron por encima de las mujeres en la etapa tres (preocupación por ajustarse al rol esperado e interés y cuidado por los amigos y la familia). Las implicaciones de estos resultados para la psicometría, investigación y aplicación en la escuela son discutidas.
