Su historia tiene una base en la tradición de médico de cabecera y tiene una historia de más de 40 años de existencia en el mundo, en el Perú se inició en 1989. La práctica de la Medicina Familiar requiere un cambio del paradigma biomédico al biopsicosocial y sostenerse en pilares como la integralidad, continuidad, coordinación en el cuidado y orientación a la familia.
