REPRESENTATIONS OF THE ANDEAN CONDEMNED IN PERUVIAN REGIONAL CINEMA

Peruvian regional cinema incorporated characters from Andean oral literature into its cinematic universe. The Condemned is one of those beings that appears in films produced in Andean regions during the present century, but with new characteristics compared to how he has been described in the oral narratives of the past compiled by Lira, Monge, Ansión, Payne, and Morote Best, among others. Commonly defined as an undead being who eternally pays for a transgression by devouring human beings, in regional films he has been represented as a kind of vampire, a cannibalistic zombie, a stigmatized child, or a dark avenger. He has also been used as a symbol of latent violence in the communities. In this article, through a formal narrative and stylistic analysis of the films, these representations are detailed, and the influence of foreign cinematic fictions on them is explored.
