Por ello, la demanda del tráfico aéreo en la región del cusco comienza a decaer notablemente y se reduce el nivel de servicio en el aeropuerto. Según los registros estadísticos en el año 2012 el AIVA tuvo más de 1.9 millones de pasajeros (Mpax), y durante los últimos 10 años (2003-2012) presenta una tasa de crecimiento media anual del 11.6%. La principal ruta del AIVA es Lima aunque también hay rutas domésticas con Puerto Maldonado, Juliaca y Arequipa; a su vez hay conexiones internacionales de menor frecuencia de vuelos con La Paz (Bolivia). Por tanto, el AIVA podría llegar a tener una capacidad práctica cercana a los 4.0 Mpax, gracias a las diferentes ampliaciones y reformas que deberían estar listas en el 2020. A partir del año 2023, aproximadamente, el AIVA comenzaría a estar totalmente saturado y por tanto la demanda del tráfico aéreo comenzaría a decaer notablemente, disminuyendo el nivel de servicio. La solución a la demanda del tráfico aéreo se daría con la construcción del aeropuerto de Chinchero. Se proyecta construir con una capacidad de 5.0 Mpax, lo que permitiría dar respuesta a la demanda de tráfico hasta el año 2025 según las proyecciones de demanda previstas por las consultoras. En consecuencia, las actuales condiciones del AIVA le impiden cumplir con los niveles de servicio requerido, de acuerdo a las normas y recomendaciones de la OACI. Por ello se viene proponiendo la ejecución del Proyecto aeroportuario en la Región del Cusco mediante el nuevo Aeropuerto en Chinchero – Cusco (ACC).
