Si bien se asume que la teoría del apego es aplicable fuera del mundo occidental, y los estudios muestran que parece ser relevante en otras regiones, se sabe poco sobre el grado en que sus hipótesis centrales son respaldadas por la investigación en América Latina, y menos aún en zonas rurales andinas. El presente trabajo pretende colaborar con llenar este vacío. Primero, se realizó una revisión literaria que incluyó estudios empíricos sobre la teoría del apego que se llevaron a cabo en países de América Latina. Luego, se realizó un estudio piloto para explorar uno de los principales conceptos de la teoría del apego, la sensibilidad materna, a partir de videos que la autora de esta tesis había recopilado previamente con su grupo de investigación en el Perú. Este estudio piloto proporcionó las bases para el diseño del principal estudio empírico reportado en esta tesis, que examina hasta qué punto la teoría del apego es relevante en un área rural andina peruana.This dissertation aimed to shed light on the study of attachment theory in areas other than western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD; Henrich et al., 2010) societies that dominate the literature.
