description La presente investigación tiene como objetivo explorar y describir las formas en las que se manifiesta y los motivos asociados al involucramiento de los padres y madres en la educación escolar en zonas rurales. Para cumplir con este objetivo se realizaron entrevistas con familiares de estudiantes, docentes y directores de las instituciones educativas de la zona. Las respuestas de estas entrevistas se organizaron en base a categorías creadas para esta investigación. En el estudio se manifiestan las diversas formas a través de las cuales los padres y madres aportan al funcionamiento de la escuela, brindando las condiciones necesarias para la operación de la misma a través de su participación en faenas de construcción y preparación de desayunos escolares así como dando dinero a la escuela directamente o indirectamente. Los padres apoyan también en casa dando soporte y revisando las tareas de sus hijos. Los principales motivos asociados al involucramiento están relacionados a la búsqueda de mejores condiciones de vida y al desarrollo de habilidades necesarias (especialmente en relación a la lecto-escritura) para poder migrar a zonas urbanas y continuar su formación, idealmente siguiendo una carrera profesional. Estos deseos de profesionalización son muchas veces acompañados de una fuerte desvaloración del estilo de vida de los propios padres y madres de familia.

Estos deseos de profesionalización son muchas veces acompañados de una fuerte desvaloración del estilo de vida de los propios padres y madres de familia.The aim of this article is to explore and describe how do parents get involved in their children’s education and which motives are believed to be associated with this participation in rural areas of the country. In order to achieve this goal we interviewed parents, teachers, school principals and the head of the Local Office of Educational Management. The information gathered during these interviews was organized through content analysis with ad hoc labels. Our findings show that parents assist greatly in school’s operation, by engaging in communal works (various works in infrastructure), taking turns making breakfast or giving money to the school (either directly, by taking part in fundraising activities or through payments to the Parents’ Association). Parents can also be involved by helping their child with their homework or by checking it up. Most of the motives associated to parental involvement are related to the pursuit of better living conditions by helping their kids develop the necessary skills (specially the ability to read and write) in order to migrate to urban center and continue their schooling, ideally aspiring towards a professional degree.
