Publicación Especial, n° 9, 2010.Páginas 1175-1178.Las fuentes termales vienen siendo utilizadas por la humanidad desde épocas muy antiguas, los romanos fueron una de las civilizaciones que más las utilizó teniendo evidencia de ello en Italia y España. En el Perú, el vestigio de uso más antiguo y conocido del uso de las fuentes termales, es el caso de las fuentes de Baños del Inca en Cajamarca, antiguamente llamados Baños de Pultumarca (lugar caliente), nombre dado porque en esas fuentes el Inca Atahualpa tomaba baños de relajación y recuperación, aunque evidencias históricas indican que hubo un antiguo aprovechamiento del recursos termal desde tiempos preIncas (curacas de la cultura Caxamarca) (en MINCETUR, 2005). Las fuentes termales en Perú constituyen un invaluable recurso desde el punto de vista turístico, económico, cultural y social.
