Among patients with malignant diseases, those with hematologic neoplasms are at a higher risk for poor outcomes. The objective of this study was to register treatment modifications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and their short-term consequences in Latin America. Methods: Multicenter, prospective, observational, cohort study including patients older than 14 years from 14 centers in four countries (Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Panama) who had a confirmed diagnosis of acute leukemia, and who were undergoing active treatment since the first COVID-19 case in each country until the cutoff on July 15, 2020. Results: We recruited 635 patients. Treatment modifications because of the COVID-19 pandemic were reported in 40.8% of cases. The main reason for such modifications was logistic issues (55.0%) and the most frequent modification was chemotherapy delay (42.0%). A total of 13.1% patients developed COVID-19 disease, with a mortality of 37.7%. Several factors were identified as independently associated with mortality, including a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (odds ratio 2.38 [95% CI, 1.47 to 3.84]; P < .001), while the use of telemedicine was identified as a protective factor (odds ratio 0.36 [95% CI, 0.18 to 0.82]; P = .014). Conclusion: These results highlight the collateral damage of COVID-19 in oncology patients.application/pdfengAmerican Society of Clinical OncologyUSinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccesshttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Acute LeukemiaCOVID-19https://purl.org/pe-repo/ocde/ford#3.02.21Treating Acute Leukemia During the COVID-19 Pandemic in an Environment With Limited Resources: A Multicenter Experience in Four Latin American Countriesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionreponame:INEN-Institucionalinstname:Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicasinstacron:INENORIGINALR Demichelis-Gómez 2021.pdfapplication/pdf248652https://repositorio.inen.sld.pe/backend/api/core/bitstreams/f4f22f78-717b-4b2f-868c-27dd3dbf9dd9/download99cd06e94ad89d16ec2f6da889ed07ceMD51trueAnonymousREADTEXTR Demichelis-Gómez 2021.pdf.txtWritten by FormatFilter org.dspace.app.mediafilter.TikaTextExtractionFilter on 2025-03-29T20:43:45Z (GMT).Extracted texttext/plain41406https://repositorio.inen.sld.pe/backend/api/core/bitstreams/0052797c-8702-4c83-9c11-d4834c7ebdf4/download219c4f33441d14d4dcce2c44291fc192MD54falseAnonymousREADTHUMBNAILR Demichelis-Gómez 2021.pdf.jpgWritten by FormatFilter org.dspace.app.mediafilter.PDFBoxThumbnail on 2025-03-29T20:43:45Z (GMT).Generated Thumbnailimage/jpeg48358https://repositorio.inen.sld.pe/backend/api/core/bitstreams/9cda5dbb-13e0-41aa-b706-d38207e2deb7/download1115685991d0f6bfe3c574349cd2c1c9MD55falseAnonymousREAD20.500.14703/83oai:repositorio.inen.sld.pe:20.500.14703/832026-02-18T21:48:08.812Zhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessopen.accesshttps://repositorio.inen.sld.peRepositorio del Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicasrepositorio@inen.sld.pe
