Es importante también, conocer las funciones que la institución realiza en beneficio de una mejor calidad de vida para todos los habitantes del país. El Instituto Geofísico del Perú, es un organismo público descentralizado adscrito al Ministerio del Ambiente y que se rige por su propia Ley Orgánica, establecida en el Decreto Legislativo N° 136 del año 1981. En ella se enumeran sus principales funciones: -Ejecutar proyectos de investigación científica para comprender la naturaleza del medio ambiente geofísico de nuestro país y aportar información vital para los planes de prevención de desastres producidos por los peligros naturales. Ser el centro de perfeccionamiento académico de alto nivel científico y técnico para estudiantes universitarios y afines incorporándolos en las actividades de investigación y desarrollo del país. -Ofrecer asistencia en tecnología y ciencias de la sismología, vulcanología, geodesia espacial, astronomía, alta atmósfera, variabilidad del tiempo y clima, peligro sísmico, sismicidad inducida, prospección geofísica, propagación de ondas electromagnéticas, recepción y procesamiento de imágenes de satélite, entre otras.
