This article on ontological perspectives on forests seeks to contribute to the development of a forest ontology that will make it possible to examine and strengthen the theoretical, political, institutional, legal, educational and technical framework of the forest sciences and to review the relationship with forests, which to date is strongly anthropocentric. It is concluded that the confl uence of positivist science, hegemonic economy and politics, reinforced by forestry education and communication, is leading to the institutionalized hegemonic approach of the ontology of the forest and the human being. Even sustainable development is not an accurate proposal as long as it maintains the essence of its economic orientation and its instrumental relationship with nature and forests. In this separation, forests are reduced to providers of renewable natural resources, natural capital or goods and services oriented towards economic growth. Although there are interesting advances in relation to sustainable forest management proposals, it can still be conceived as a process and not a goal. Although it is still possible to fi nd manifestations of a relational ontology in indigenous peoples, there is worrying evidence of its replacement by a disjunctive ontology. Th e knowledge of forest ontology invites to review the relationship with forests and the need to incorporate a socio-ecosystemic vision of forests and a close interrelation with forest ethics in a biocentric perspective.
El presente artículo sobre perspectivas ontológicas de los bosques busca contribuir al desarrollo de una ontología forestal que permita examinar y fortalecer el marco teórico, político, institucional, legal, educativo y técnico de las ciencias forestales y revisar la relación con los bosques que a la fecha es fuertemente antropocéntrica. Se concluye que la confl uencia de la ciencia positivista, la economía hegemónica y la política, reforzados por la educación forestal y la comunicación, están llevando a que la ontología disyuntiva entre el bosque y el ser humano se constituya en el enfoque hegemónico institucionalizado. Ni siquiera el desarrollo sostenible constituye una propuesta certera en tanto mantiene la esencia de su orientación economicista y su relación instrumental de la naturaleza y de los bosques. En esta separación los bosques son reducidos a proveedores de recursos naturales renovables, capital natural o bienes y servicios orientados al crecimiento económico. Aunque hay interesantes avances en relación a propuestas de manejo forestal sostenible todavía puede ser concebido como un proceso y no una meta. Aunque todavía en los pueblos indígenas es posible encontrar manifestaciones de una ontología relacional hay preocupantes evidencias de su reemplazo por una ontología disyuntiva. El conocimiento de la ontología forestal invita a revisar la relación con los bosques y la necesidad de incorporar una visión socioecosistémica de los bosques y una estrecha interrelación con la ética forestal en perspectiva biocéntrica.
