Prolactin (PRL) is the oldest hormone secreted by the pituitary gland. This, or a similar, has been present in vertebrates, from fish to mammals, from 400 million years ago, speaking primarily in their growth, development, metabolism, osmoregulation (controlling water and electrolyte balance) and intervening in their reproduction, as well as the constitution of the ectoderm and act synergistically or antagonistically with steroid hormones.
La Prolactina (PRL), es la hormona más antigua segregada por la hipófisis. Esta, o una muy similar, ha estado presente en los vertebrados, desde peces a mamíferos, desde hace 400 millones de años, interviniendo principalmente en su crecimiento, desarrollo, metabolismo, osmoregulación (controlando el agua y el balance electrolítico) é interviniendo en su  reproducción, así como en la constitución del ectodermo y actuando sinérgica ó antagónicamente con las hormonas esteroideas.
