Pelvic inflammatory disease: Pathophysiology

Man reproduces sexually, by sexual intercourse, and there is the possibility to transmit a series of diseases by this route. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) involves upper reproductive tract inflammatory disorders. We review in this article PID pathogenesis, immunologic factors, immunity against bacteriae, adaptation mechanisms, all these concepts necessary for treatment based on knowledge of PID causative agents and host response.
El hombre se reproduce sexualmente, por relaciones sexuales, existiendo la posibilidad de transmitir una serie de enfermedades por dicha vía. La enfermedad inflamatoria pélvica (EIP) comprende una serie de desórdenes inflamatorios del tracto reproductivo superior. Se revisa en este artículo la patogenia de la EIP, los factores inmunológicos, la inmunidad frente a la bacteria, los mecanismos adaptativos, todo lo cual puede servir para un tratamiento basado en el conocimiento de los agentes causantes de la EIP y de la respuesta del huésped.
