Psychological factor in couples with infertility problems

OBJETIVE: To correlate infertility and the psychological factor in infertile couples. DESIGN Descriptive retrospective clinical psychological study of couples with infertility problems. MATERIAL: Twenty-five infertile couples studied through the following instruments: a) interview, b),5pecial card and c) Zung autoevaluation scale. LOCATI0N.- Human Reproduction Service, Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital, SSPT RESULTS: Emotional area: high levels of anxiety and depression, more in women (70%). Social area: deficit in social life, with performance significantly below previous functional levels, 65% in women, 35% in men. Sexual area: decrease of sexual interest (70% in women, plus vaginismus). CONCLUSIONS: The study of the psychological factor is very important in the evaluation of the infertile couple. We should consider the high prevalence of anxiety, depression and sexual disfunction in the infertile couple, particulary in women.
OBJETIVO: Correlacionar la infertilidad y el factor psicológico en parejas infértiles, DISEÑO: Estudio clínico descriptivo retrospectivo de parejas con problemas de infertilidad, evaluadas psicológicamente. MATERIAL: Veinticinco parejas con infertilidad evaluadas a través de los siguientes instrumentos: a) entrevista de pareja, b)ficha elaborada específicamente o escala de autoevaluación de Zung. LUGAR: Servicio de Reproducción Humana del Hospital Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati Martins del LPSS. RESULTADOS.- En el área emocional se encuentra eleva dos índices de ansiedad y depresión, mayor en mujeres (70%). En el área social se evidencia déficit en la vida social, con una performance significativamente por debajo de sus niveles anteriores de funcionamiento, 65% en mujeres, 35% en varones. En el área sexual, hay apagamiento del interés sexual (70% en mujeres; a lo que se agrega el problema del vaginismo). CONCLUSIONES: El factor psicológico es de suma importancia en la evaluación de la pareja infértil, siendo imprescindible en el estudio de infertilidad. Se debe considerar la alta prevalencia de ansiedad, depresión y disfunción sexual en estas parejas, principalmente en la mujer.
