Gestational malaria is a distinct clinical entity. Due to the presence of the placenta and fetus the clinical and laboratory findings have their own characteristics that differentiate it from adults’ malaria. There are alterations in the woman's body and the placenta that affect to a greater or lesser degree to the fetus that is exposed to vertical transmission. Both treatment and prognosis are somewhat different. In this paper we present important aspects of this new clinical entity that deserves a special approach.
La malaria gestacional es una entidad clínica muy especial. Debido a la presencia de la placenta y el feto, el cuadro clínico y de laboratorio tienen características propias que la diferencian de la malaria del adulto; se producen alteraciones en el organismo de la mujer y en la placenta, afectando en mayor o menor grado al feto, el mismo que queda expuesto a la transmisión vertical. El tratamiento es algo diferente y el pronóstico también. En las páginas siguientes exponemos aspectos importantes de esta nueva entidad clínica que merece un abordaje especial.
