A new lecture of a fundamental book of the author, Tristes Tropiques (1955) will be our guideline to look on some premises of his method and thought. The aim is to remark its trascendence to human sciences and general social theory, and to make clear the author’s constant consciousness about the particular historic moment of a singular social or etnographic observation. Also to mention briefly some of his thoughts and points of view about cultural and historical transformation —later developed by himself— that pointed beyond of the circunscription of structuralist procedures to strict synchronistic social situations. Thus structuralism is now open to the study of structural transformation, an aspect studied by later scholars on the basis of part of Levi Strauss’s approaches.
Un retorno al examen de un texto clave del autor, los Tristes Trópicos (1955), sirve para puntualizar algunas de las premisas de su método y pensamiento, no sólo para resaltar su trascendencia para las ciencias humanas y la teoría social en general y así explicitar la conciencia permanente del autor acerca del momento histórico particular de la observación social y etnográfica, sino también para señalar su tipo de reflexión sobre las civilizaciones, su contacto mutuo y transformación. Algunos de estos puntos de vista, ulteriormente desarrollados en su obra, apuntaban más allá de la circunscripción del método estructural a situaciones estrictamente sincrónicas, abriéndolo al estudio de la transformación estructural, un aspecto abordado por autores posteriores en parte sobre la base de sus estudios.
