Published in 1946, Asch’s study was a heuristically important paradigm in the field of impression formation research, in particular for suggesting that an initial impression, even if strong enough to anchor subsequent social judgments (primacy effect), could be modified if the perceiver were offered decisive information capable of leading to a transformation of the initial impression (centrality effect). The present study reports the testing of a modified version of Asch’s paradigm, conducted over 9 years, with 667 university students from the northeast region, aiming to identify, the joint effect of a photo and the attribution of psychological traits on impression management of a fictional teacher. We can conclude that both categorization and centrality influence the formation of impressions.

The aim of this study is to explore the patterns of emotion recognition in Mexican bilinguals using the JACFEE (Matsumoto & Ekman, 1988). Previous cross cultural research has documented high agreement in judgments of facial expressions of emotion, however, none of the previous studies has included data from Mexican culture. Participants were 229 Mexican college students (mean age 21.79). Results indicate that each of the seven universal emotions: anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise was recognized by the participants above chance levels (p < .001), regardless of the gender or ethnicity of the posers. These findings replicate reported data on the high cross cultural agreement in emo- tion recognition (Ekman, 1994) and contribute to the increasing body of evidence regardingthe universality of emotions.

Femicide is a complex problem that involves successive forms of violence in emotional relationships, causing significant individual and collective consequences. The objective was to analyze the representational systems present in the discursive repertoires in legal sentences about cases of feminicide in the state of Bahia, in 2020 and 2021. Documentary study of cases reported as feminicide by the Public Ministry in 2020/2021 in Bahia, available at Jusbrasil Platform. 121 documents were found, of which 15 sentences met the inclusion criteria. These were analyzed using the Social Network Analysis approach. The results revealed significant differences in judicial decisions and their reasoning. When comparing the positions between male and female judges, it was noticeable to identify these differences related to gender. Thus, the sentences were mainly anchored in sexist justifications, mater...

This study examines beliefs concerning the content of history, the meaning of Second World War (WWII) and the evaluation of historical events in relation to pro-war attitudes. Participants were 1183 university students from Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Cape Verde. Four supra-level dimensions in the representations of the past were found: History as progress and leaders-oriented, history as focused on justifying calamities, history as violence and catastrophe, and history as meaningless. The prevalent positive beliefs about history were linked with enthusiasm to fight in a future war for one’s country.

A Truth Commission (TC) was carried out in Brazil (2012-2014) to investigate human rights violations perpetrated by state agents, especially during the military dictatorship (1964-1985). TCs are supposed to help societies on the reconstruction of social cohesion after authoritarian or violent periods. We conducted three studies with undergraduate students and adult samples between 2014 and 2017. Evaluating the TC as effective was related to higher punctuations on the variables of social cohesion, even controlling the effects of political positioning. The TC effectiveness perception was associated with the emotional reaction (both, negative or positive) and a positive attitude towards remembering the past. Nonetheless, we found some different results across the three studies. These differences are discussed.
