Las tradiciones de Ricardo Palma muchas veces fueron leídas como fuentes históricas, a la vez como representación nostálgica del pasado, basadas en investigaciones del padre de la Academia Peruana de la Lengua. En anteriores trabajos, mostré cómo el escritor acudió a los cronistas para dar una versión personalísima de los sucesos históricos, por ejemplo con la tradición “Los caballeros de la capa” sobre la muerte de Francisco Pizarro, o pretendiendo explicar el origen de un dicho relacionado con la vida de la Perrichola en “Pues bonita soy la Castellanos”. Planteé como fundamento de la escritura palmiana la heterogeneidad, y más adelante, en 2009, con motivo de mi incorporación como miembro correspondiente de la Academia Peruana de la Lengua, me interesé por la estética de los detalles.

Al regresar del Perú, desalentada por no recuperar la herencia de su padre Mariano Tristán, Flora Tristán escribió un ensayo dedicado a la suerte de las mujeres obligadas a viajar en un mundo nada acogedor, al que tituló Necesidad de acoger a las extranjeras (1835). Este texto que nunca fue traducido al español, anuncia a la luchadora feminista, apasionada por defender a los parias y predicar el asociacionismo que fue Tristán. El trabajo se acerca a este libro y analiza su contenido en tanto permite entender el pensamiento de Tristán y el contexto de una época. Se afirma que la trayectoria vital de Tristán “fue borrada de la memoria colectiva femenina y masculina a lo largo del siglo XIX, no por la valentía de sus compromisos sino probablemente porque la historia social y la historia cultural fueron escritas y publicitadas por redes intelectuales masculinas”.
