The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of canine leptospirosis and identify factors associated with the infection in an indigenous Kamentsá population of the department of Putumayo, Colombia. Blood samples of dogs of both sexes (n=154) located in the rural area of Sibundoy Valley were collected. Demographic, sanitary, and responsible tenure variables were identified through a structured survey. Blood samples were processed by the macroscopic microagglutination test (MAT) using a reference strain collection composed of 24 serogroups of Leptospira serogroups. The prevalence of antibodies against Leptospira sp was 79.9%. The most frequent serogroups were Gripotyphosa (10.2%), Hursbridge (8.4%), Sarmin and Australis (7.2%), Canicola (6.8%) and Tarassovi (6.4%). The associated risk factors were the age of the dog, the presence of sewage and the possession of more than on...

The aim of this study was to determine the transport risk factors associated with the presence of fatigued pigs and its implications on high muscle pH in market-weight pigs. A case-control study was conducted, including 94 fatigued pigs as case and 94 typical pigs as controls. Pigs used in this study were castrated males and young females of a commercial genotype and standard market weight (mean BW 115.5 ± 1.3 kg) castrated and gilts of a standard commercial genotype. Structured face-to-face questionnaires were applied to characterize the transport conditions, and pH45 and pH24 carcass were evaluated. The logistic regression model showed that numbers of decks, the presence of assistant, sex, and transport speed and time were variables associated with the presence of fatigued pigs. Fatigued pigs had more probability of high muscular pH than typicalpigs (p<0.01). These results indicate...

The objective of the study was to evaluate the human-animal interaction (HAI) and the handling practices at a livestock market in Medellin, Colombia. Data was collected at four livestock auctions in June 2014. A total of 720 bovines were distributed into 241 and 28 groups during the weighing and driving to the corral respectively. Findings during the veterinary inspection, as well as tactile, auditory and visual interactions of cattle handlers and behavioral responses of cattle were evaluated. In the veterinary inspection, 19.5% of the groups were observed, especially due to open wounds (38.3%). In the weighing area, there were 824 interactions, predominantly visual (44.1%) and then tactile (30.1%) and auditory (25.8%); however, 73.0, 66.4 and 88.4% of the animals had no behavioral response to visual, tactile and auditory interactions, respectively. Twenty-four interactions were recorded...

The aims of this study were to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the electrical stunning head-heart (MA1) and CO2 stunning (MA2), and to assess the infrastructure and management of pigs in two commercial slaughterhouses in Colombia. A crosssectional study that evaluated 520 pigs (MA1=185 and MA2=335) was performed. Behavioral indicators in the stunning box and consciousness indicators before and after bleeding were evaluated. Eye movements (39%) and spontaneous eye blinking (36.7%) were common in MA1, while rhythmic breathing (24.1%) was evident in MA2. The effectiveness of stunning was low in the two slaughterhouses before (48.7%, 50.5%) and after bleeding (79.5%, 37.3%). It is recommended to establish indicators to routinely assess the effectiveness of stunning, and a programme of preventive maintenance of equipment and continuous training of staff.

The signing of the peace agreement between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and the Colombian government brought a change in the social dynamics of rural regions of Colombia that has affected small sheep producers in post-conflict regions. The aim of this study was to identify the sociodemographic factors that affect the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in extensive sheep systems in the Colombian post-conflict and their relationship with some health, production and economic indicators. Thirteen sheep farms located in Marulanda, Colombia were evaluated. The implementation of the GAP was determined through a structured evaluation instrument based on Colombian legislation (Res. 20277 of 2018). In addition, a sample of sheep under 1 year of age was taken from each farm to conduct clinical examinations and laboratory analysis to obtain sanitary indicators. Age (β...
