INTRODUCCION: La cirrosis es causa importante de morbilidad y mortalidad en el mundo. En Peru ocupa el 5` lugar entre las causas de mortalidad general y el 2` lugar entre las enfermedades digestivas y hepatobiliares. Es la primera causa de demanda de hospitalizacion en el servicio de gastroenterologia del HNERM. Es necesario conocer sus caracteristicas clinicas y epidemiologicas para proponer medidas claras de prevencion. METODOS: Estudio transversal, observacional, descriptivo de las caracteristicas epidemiologicas y clinicas de los pacientes hospitalizados por cirrosis hepatica en la Unidad de Higado del HNERM entre enero 2001 y junio 2004. RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron 475 pacientes. El 45.1% correspondio al sexo femenino, la edad promedio fue 63.4 anos (r=26-93). Se realizó un ensayo clínico aleatorizado con pacientes cirróticos mayores de 18 años, con sangrado digestivo, que ingresaron entre Julio del 2008 a julio del 2010 a la Unidad de Hemorragia Digestiva del HNERM, con el objetivo de determinar si el uso de Cefazolina como profilaxis antibiótica produce una disminución significativa de las infecciones en pacientes cirróticos con sangrado digestivo, comparado con Ciprofloxacino. El estudio demuestró que la profilaxis antibiótica con Cefazolina o Ciprofloxacino, tiene similar eficacia y podría ser valedera para la población cirrótica con bajo riesgo de infección o estadios Child no avanzados.

OBJETIVO: Determinar si el uso de Cefazolina como profilaxis antibiótica produce una disminución significativa de las infecciones en pacientes cirróticos con sangrado digestivo, comparado con Ciprofloxacino. Material y MétodoS: Ensayo Clínico aleatorizado. Se incluyeron a pacientes cirróticos mayores de 18 años, con sangrado digestivo, que ingresaron entre Julio del 2008 a julio del 2010 a la Unidad de hemorragia Digestiva del HNERM, sin evidencia clínica ni de laboratorio de infección al momento del ingreso y que no hubieran recibido tratamiento antibiótico las últimas 2 semanas. A un grupo se le administró Ciprofloxacino 200 mg bid EV y al otro Cefazolina 1 g tid EV.x 7 dias.
